Berthe Morisot Tutorial for PhotoImpact 10
(Can be done using earlier versions of PI).

Description: Make a beautiful card using several images and the Clone Airbrush Tool.
Author: Wouter Démoet.
Terms of Use: Please read
Skill Level: Beginner. I assume you know where the tools are in PhotoImpact.
Additional Files:
  • 2 images and a mask of your choice or you may use mine. You can download all the files from here. Put the unzipped folder on your desktop. We will open and save our files from there.
The hydrangea image is a detail from one of my makro photos. It is a petal of a hydrangea plant in my computer room.
The other image is a part of Berthe Morisot's "Julie with her Nurse" painting (1880). Berthe is one of my favorite artists when it comes to impressionists paintings. She was French and got a lot of recognition for her work during her life.
  • Paint Engine (freeware). You can download them from here. Please read the instructions, otherwise this filter won't work.
  • FM Tile Tools. Not a free plugin but some of the filters will continue to work after the trial period has expired. Please download from here
If you need help with installing the filters, Debbie Hardisty has a great tutorial about it. You can find it here.
NOTE: Save your work often. I suggest you read the entire tutorial, before you start. If you use a Pen and Tablet settings for the Airbrush and the Eraser brush may vary. And if you need help, or if you have any suggestions, please don't hesitate to contact me at:

this page.

Instructions:
After installing the filters start your copy of PhotoImpact and open both images and the mask. Minimize the baby image and the mask. We will work on the hydrangea image first. In the Menu bar go to Selection: Import Selection:

Convert to Object. Rename this layer to "mask". Deselect and hide this layer in your Layer Manager:

In the Menu bar: Adjust - Resize. We need to increase the size of our Base Image by 125%:

Effect: Fantastic Machines - Paint Engine with these settings:
Note: If you like this preset, before you click Apply, click the Save button, give it a name and OK.

Effect: FM Tile Tools - Blend Emboss with these settings:

Select your mask layer and unhide it.

Right click: Align - Center Both and Merge All. Adjust: Brightness & Contrast - Contrast: 12

The background is ready now and we will clone the baby on top of the hydrangea image. Line your hydrangea and morisot images up like this:

Change to the Clone - Airbrush and in the Attribute Toolbar use these settings:

In your Brush Panel click the Options tab and use these settings:

Click the Advanced tab and set the Spacing to 10

Click on the baby image to make it active, click on Start Point in the Attribute Toolbar and click in the middle of the baby's face:

Click on the hydrangea image to make it active and make sure that in the Attribute Toolbar the Mode: Paint as Object is selected (see above screen shot of the Attribute Toolbar).

With a slow circular stroke clone the baby's face and a part of the dress onto the image like this: Don't worry if you are not exact in the same position as I. We are painting as an object so later we can move the baby if needed.

Paint as much as the baby's face as you can but try to avoid including the background of the morisot painting. Change the Transparency of your Brush to 62 and go slightly over the edges of the baby's face like so:

When you are happy with the results, click out of Mode and with your Pick Tool move the baby in place like this. The dress may overlap the white edge of the flower petal, but we will fix that:

Keep selected
